Indian School Darsait proudly hosted the esteemed 'Mon Avis' Inter-School Debate Competition for the Ambassador's Rolling Trophy on Thursday, 29 August 2024. Organized under the aegis of the Board of Directors, Indian Schools Oman, the event took place at the Senior School Auditorium, bringing together some of the brightest young minds from across various Indian schools in Oman for an inspiring exchange of ideas.
This highly anticipated event featured thirty-two participants from sixteen Indian Schools across Oman, all competing for the prestigious Ambassador’s Rolling Trophy, which was ultimately won by the outstanding team from Indian School Salalah.
‘Mon Avis’ has firmly established itself as a cornerstone of intellectual engagement among Indian schools in Oman. Conceptualized to commemorate the International Day of Peace, this event not only highlights the power of dialogue but also underscores the significance of peaceful discourse in our increasingly complex world.
The valedictory function was honored by the presence of the Chief Guest, His Excellency Shri Amit Narang, Ambassador of India to the Sultanate of Oman. Distinguished guests included Dr. Sivakumar Manickam, Chairman, Board of Directors, Indian Schools Oman; Mr. Pardeep Kumar, Head of Chancery, Embassy of India; Mr. M. P. Vinoba, Senior Principal and Education Advisor, Board of Directors, Indian Schools Oman; Mr. Vijaya Saravanan Sankaran, President, School Management Committee, Indian School Darsait, along with other members of the School Management Committee and invited dignitaries.
The debate centered on the thought-provoking motion, "Social Media Obsession Impacts Teenagers’ Mental Health," with participants delivering persuasive arguments both for and against the motion. A distinguished panel of judges—Mr. George Thomas, Mr. Govind Negi, and Mr. Saiju Victor—had the challenging task of evaluating the participants.
The team from Indian School Salalah, represented by Hamna Nishthar and Zaina Fathima, emerged victorious, claiming the coveted Ambassador’s Rolling Trophy. Among the individual accolades, Brijesh Chowdary Mupparaju of Indian School Al Ghubra received awards for Best Speaker and Best Rebuttal Speaker. Zaina Fathima of Indian School Salalah was named First Runner-up, and Tanishka Goel of Indian School Nizwa secured the Second Runner-up position. All other participants were recognized with certificates of participation.
In his closing remarks, His Excellency Shri Amit Narang praised the participants for their articulate and insightful arguments. He lauded the debaters by drawing parallels to the wisdom and intellectual rigor found in ancient Indian scriptures, and concluded by quoting Archbishop Desmond Tutu, “Let us not raise our voices, let us improve our arguments.”
‘Mon Avis’ was much more than just a competition; it was a celebration of intellectual rigor, public speaking, and the exchange of ideas, providing young debaters with a valuable platform to refine their skills and boost their confidence.
